SchulmanArt: How long have you been selling professionally on etsy?
I have been selling professionally on Etsy since March of 2009, that makes this my third year. I love the community on Etsy and haven't found anything like it elsewhere. I think it gives you great access to people looking for the unusual or one of a kind.

SchulmanArt: Where did you study design?
I studied design at The Rhode Island School of Design, but I've diverted pretty far from where I began as a Textile Design Major. The thing about a good design programs though is that they give you the tools to be able to design well, no matter what the material. You learn how to see, how to render your ideas and that is the most important part of a good art education. My favorite medium is definitely Precious Metal Clay, it's nature as a clay is very fluid and adaptable, you can easily get it to do what you want, and mold it to what ever form you like. The silver starts out in a clay form and after firing to a very high temperature becomes solid fine silver. The other wonderful part about silver clay is that it's completely recycled silver, so instead of running mines they are reusing old factory waste silver and making it into a safe workable jewelry metal.

How do you get inspired?
I've always been inspired by nature so I guess it makes sense that I usually start working on my jewelry by walking through my garden and getting ideas from the flowers and herbs that I grow, then I sketch the plants into my designs before crafting the unique pieces of jewelry.

Describe a typical day for you.
My day usually starts out with checking on the garden, if the plants aren't doing do well I have nothing to cast, so it takes a lot of time and maintenance. Usually watering at least twice a day, pruning and weeding it all goes into keeping the plants healthy and the leaves shaped just right. Then comes the first sandings of the day on the greenware, touching up the pieces I left to dry over night, smoothing them out and getting each piece perfect, can take a few days. While I wait for the layers of clay to dry I start to cast new pieces usually to fill orders.

The other side of having my Etsy business takes up almost every afternoon and I think it's the part most people forget about balancing books, creating treasuries, tweeting, and working on social media all while trying to keep up with my Etsy Teams and consistently writing and cooking for my blog The Painted Rabbit.

What is your studio space like?
My studio is small, it's actually in the garage attached to our house, I set up a double row of tables under shelves that are attached to the wall. This gives me almost all the space I need. When working with Precious Metal Clay you need a dark cool space to keep the material from drying out, so the lack of light in the garage works out well, and the coolness of the concrete floors helps lengthen the working time. The only view out comes from the garage door which I only open for ventilation when I am firing pieces of jewelry. I live in a small community where people sometimes pop over to watch me work.

Father knows best

Interview with Fashion Illustrator Linda Tinfena
interview by Miriam Schulman, @schulmanArt

Fashion Illustrations for sale on etsy
How did you become interested in fashion illustration?
I have always loved fashion illustration. I grew up in France where Gruau's illustrations were everywhere, then Antonio Lopez came on the scene and all hell broke loose. When I first came to America, one of the first person I met was the great fashion illustrator Tony Viramontes, he and I would draw together and discuss things and cruise around.

You have a lot of corporate clients-- how do they find you?
I have been bold and shown my work to all my corporate clients on a whim and they responded and hired me on the spot. I should be bold more often.

How do you get inspired?
I used to get inspired by fashion magazines but they have been so ugly and ridiculous lately and the fashion is so bad and the models so sad, I look elsewhere... there are some amazing bloggers, tumblers and I use photos I take of my friends or the people I shoot when I work as a photographer, or just people with an innate sense of style walking down the street, whatever makes me stop and look twice is what inspires me.

What is your studio space like?:
My studio space is very organized, of course that changes as soon as I get inspired, but I put everything back in its place. I actually have a whole room where I can create and work in, with a whole shelf where my cat can sit and watch me draw and fall asleep.

How has your parents influenced you creatively ?
I think in the life of every artist, there is someone who taught them to see
early on and for me, that someone was my dad. He was the one who took the whole family to Italy to show us Michelangelo's work. I remember him pointing at the marble statue of Moses and saying that there was blood in those veins and you know what? he was right. I also remember him calling me out from another room to show me how amazing a red onion sliced in half looked. It is also true that I grew up without TV because he thought TV was poison and excuse me for pointing out the obvious but he was right again, wasn't he?

Scarsdale Summer in the Art Studio

Scarsdale Summer
by Miriam Schulman, @schulmanArt

Scarsdale Village Street Scene in Watercolor by Miriam Schulman
Yesterday, I wrote about my memories of Atlanta summers. Now, I live in Scarsdale New York. We also have a community pool, but when I go I hide my freckle prone skin in the shade and order salads from the snack bar. My kids love the pool, especially the feeling of jumping off the high dive again and again into the frigid waters. When they were younger I dangled my feet in the pool as they splashed with their friends, and I still remember resting my swollen pregnant belly in the baby pool while my toddler played.

Decorating Idea with Landscape Art
Summer is a great time for me to get a lot of art done since I usually start hitting my stride around 3 o'clock and don't have to worry about breaking my momentum to spend time with my children returning from school. My nights are free of homework help and nagging so I can either relax or finish paintings in my studio. I'm looking forward to another productive summer and have a large stack of canvases awaiting my creativity.

This original watercolor painting pictures the charming suburban town of Scarsdale in Westchester County, New York. The modern landscape art includes a street scene with early morning shoppers with seasonal American flags decorating the streets. This original art is signed by the artist. This New York landscape is one in a series of watercolor paintings of street scenes.

Georgia on my Mind, Atlanta Skyline Art

Hey Y'All
by Miriam Schulman, @schulmanArt

Atlanta Skyline watercolor painting for sale
I moved from Miami to Atlanta when I was eight years old and I lived there for four years. I have great memories of this city. We lived in a section of the city that was suburban that had a community pool which I spent the entire summer from the moment I got up until dinnertime. We happily sucked down colored sugar packets and ate microwave pizza. I remember seeing if I could make it to one end of the lap pool to the next without coming up for air. The society women tanned themselves while working on cross stitch samplers and I kept track of how many different bikinis the most popular one wore.

Decorating Idea using Atlanta Skyline Art
My brother in law lives there now and the city has changed plenty. Six lanes of traffic to get in out and around the town. The downtown is still beautiful. Plenty of trees in this city and great places to visit like the World of Coke and also the newly built Georgia Aquarium. On my visit there I was inspired by the view from the rooftop of the parking garage.Check out this decorating idea. The painting is not too big, nor too small to hang over a love seat, a mantel or a bed.
